The American Comic Strip
Born on January 14, 1863, Richard Felton
Outcault, was the creator of the series
The Yellow Kid and Buster Brown, and
credited with being the inventor of the
modern comic strip. He began his career
as a technical illustrator for Thomas
Edison connected to Edison's traveling
exhibit about electric lighting. In
1902, he introduced Buster Brown, a
mischievous boy dressed like 'little
Lord Fauntleroy, who later became the
mascot for Buster Brown Shoes. He
experimented with multiple panels and
speech balloons, making them a standard
in the comic strip world.
