Six important things to consider before purchasing your wedding dress:

l. Look through bridal magazines so you can get an idea of the style dress you may want to wear. Remember, just because the dress may look fabulous on the model in the book, it may not work for your body type so be flexible.

2. Most brides wear white, however, there are many shades of white. You will find dresses in pure white, silver white, ivory and even a champagne ivory which has a slight tint of yellow. Pastels such as baby pink or a soft blush have also become a popular alternative. Fabrics are equally important. You will find slip style dresses made of silk, as well as taffeta, lace and tulle for the fuller princess style of dress.

3. Choose a dress that you will be comfortable in for the location of your wedding. You will be wearing the dress all day. A big, poofy gown would not be appropriate for a beach wedding. You may want to go with an ankle length style of dress and a shorter veil. Wear comfortable shoes. You won't be a happy bride if your feet are hurting. Many brides will change into sandals or flats for the reception.

4. Pick a dress that compliments your body type. If you are petite, it will be important that the dress does not consume your body. An 'A-line' style of dress could be a good choice. If you are extremely busty and wish to wear a strapless dress, it might be a good idea to have detachable straps. This way you can attach them after photos and especially if you plan to do some serious dancing at the reception.

5. I cannot emphasize enough, the importance of the proper undergarments. If you have a fuller figure, then you may want to wear a long line bustier. This would create a smooth line on the waist, tummy and hips. A good bridal consultant can advise you. Your dress can also be tailored for a perfect fit.

6. Be sure your dress is age appropriate. If you are a mature woman, you would look beautiful in a dress that is sophisticated with good lines. Accessorize with jewelry such as pearls and you are sure look stunning.

Remember - this is your day. Enjoy it!
