Have you ever gone into a sporting goods
store and noticed the different
departments such as Running, Biking,
Yoga and Workout Wear?
You may think that an old baggy T-shirt
and sweatpants will be just fine for any
sport you choose to engage in. Not true.
Clothes
are designed for each type of sport to
help you function in the best form and
comfort level.
Biking
- If you were to wear baggy sweat or
track pants, you could put yourself in a
dangerous situation. Your baggy pants
could get caught in the chain causing
you injury. The proper attire would be
bike pants, which come in both short and
ankle length. The bottom of the pants
are padded for riding comfort. The tops
can be sleeveless or long sleeved, and
are usually bright in color so that you
are visible to motorists. Tops are made
of specially designed fabric that
provides moisture wicking and UV
protection. Clothes for biking are meant
to fit close to the body for your
safety.
Yoga
- When I first started practicing yoga
many moons ago, I wore a baggy T-shirt
and very loose fitting pants. Big
mistake. I found my baggy T-shirt had
worked it’s way up around my shoulders,
exposing my entire torso while trying to
navigate the “downward facing dog pose”.
It was at that uncomfortable moment I
learned the importance of proper workout
attire. Yoga clothing consists of close
to the body fitting tank tops, and calf
or ankle length pants with a wide
waistband for comfort. You will also
notice that yoga clothing comes in
pastel or earth tone colors to keep with
the feeling of serenity. Most yoga
clothing is also made of organic cotton
and bamboo fabric, with some spandex for
stretch and comfort. This type of
clothing would also be perfect for
Pilates. Some women also still enjoy the
comfort of the yoga leotard.

Running -
If you ever watch marathon
runners, you will notice
their clothes are pretty
simple. Most wear tank tops
and running shorts. If your
shorts are too loose, the
running movement can cause
inner thigh discomfort. A
lot of runners also wear
ball caps since body heat
can be lost at the top of
your head. Your average
runner dresses in layers,
which are all designed using
moisture wick fabric for
comfort. Not very many
runners wear long pants
since your legs warm up
quickly and retain heat.
However, long pants would be
a wise choice for extremely
cold weather.
For those of you that enjoy
working out in a gym be sure
and check for any dress
code. Most gyms are climate
controlled so you can wear
anything from shorts to
long pants. Workout wear
that is too tight can bind
you and restrict movement.
Too loose clothing can get
caught in the workout
equipment.
If you are unsure how your
clothing should fit for a
particular sport, check with
the sales representative in
that particular department.
Enjoy your workout--Namaste
