Valentine's
Day Themed Veggie Garden
Roses for your sweetie for
Valentines Day? Boooring.
Instead of the same old dead
flowers, why not consider a
gift that’s unique, shows
her you care, and will last
for years and years? Of
course I’m talking about a
vegetable garden, but one
with a twist.
February 14th is Valentines
Day, but it’s also the
recommended planting date
for spring crops in the
Charlotte, NC area. What’s
in a spring garden? Think of
a big bowl of salad and
you’ll have a good start.
Lettuce, arugula, spinach,
radishes, broccoli, carrots,
and peas are all easy to
grow. Beets, potatoes and
Swiss chard are spring
favorites as well as garlic,
onions and shallots.
If
you grew up with a garden in
your back yard, you’re
probably dreading all the
hard work of digging,
tilling, and worst of all –
weeding, but a raised bed
will solve all your
problems. They’re easy to
build, don’t take up a lot
of room, and best of all,
since you don’t disturb the
weed seeds in your native
soil, you can fill them with
potting mix and never have
to weed again!
A mini-garden in your back
yard is the ultimate gift
that shows you care. You
want her to enjoy fresh,
healthy vegetables all year
long. And with some careful
planning, you can develop a
Valentines Day theme that
will remind her of your gift
all spring. All you need is
a spot in your back yard
that gets at least six hours
of sun.
With the variety of heirloom
seeds growing every year,
you can have your pick of
colorful crops to grow. Here
are some of my favorites in
red: Bull blood beets,
Chioggia beets, Dragon
carrots, Red Russian kale,
Mascara lettuce, Red Velvet
lettuce, Rossimo lettuce,
Early Scarlet Globe radish
and French Breakfast radish.
