Getting
Dressed from the Inside Out By Mee Tracy -McCormick 'Princess Know it all'
While I
totally understand that looking good is really about feeling good,
it's still tough to get my "hoochie on" when inside I really wanna
rock sweat pants!
The
winter is brutal for me; I recently moved from the beachy Mexican
Jungle where a simple cotton dress and flip flops brought instant 'fabulosity'
to the scene.
Now
that I've just rolled into winter, for the first time since
childhood, (we've relocated to Nashville, TN) learning the ways to
inspire my fashion self has become a bit of a struggle.
The
really tough days are the rainy cold ones where my inner characters
(you know the aspects of our personalities that take over and
prevent us from living from our greatest selves.) “Blah, Blah,
blah,” tends to take over and show her face.
Her
only response to anyone who strikes a conversation is "Hi, It's Hard
and You Don't Understand." She truly is my inner pessimist. These
cold and rainy days scream her name and of course pull me back into
my comfy Uggs!
Luckily,
I've got a magic trick that I use quite often, especially when I
know that I have somewhere to be and I don't want to end up feeling
like "Hi I'm Not Enough” and feeling like a hot mess! Ha,ha…
Before
getting dressed and usually right after my shower, I sit in my
favorite chair and close my eyes. I see myself at whatever event or
function I am attending and imagine that I look fantastic, that I
feel great and that I'm having fun!
As I
apply my cosmetics I refuse to listen to the inner chatter in my
head; you know, that voice that points out all the things that are
wrong with my facial features and skin. I also give this same voice
the hush when she attempts to focus her attention on my hair. We can
control our inner dialogue- preparing ourselves for an outing is not
the time for self-criticism.
I use
my daughter Lola to guide and remind me, she is 3 years old and as
you all know It’s hard to find a three year old burdened by self
criticism. In fact, they have a lot to teach us: they know what they
like to wear and if you judge their ensemble they are sure to let
you have it! A three year old sees her body as perfect and when she
stands before her dress up chest, she never slams her body with
negative comments. So, I seize my inner 3 year old and allow my
imagination to guide the ship and like a little girl playing dress
up I ask myself, “What image I want to portray today?
Is
it Comfy chic?
Groovy
gal?
Fancy
Fab?
Or
Simple class.....
Then I
pick out my outfit and voila, I've left my negative characters in
the closet and I step into the world as Mee.
I’ve
learned that how we see ourselves is exactly how others view us as
we enter the room.
Dressing for our positive selves is how we make things happen. In
the depths of the winter it takes a lot of inner beauty to make life
glow, but by feeding our mind positive thoughts we can utilize the
frigged air to emphasize rosy cheeks.
