Legal Executions in the Western Territories, 1847-1911 is the foundational work for documenting every legal execution in fifteen western jurisdiction.
This book covers executions before each jurisdiction became a state, but the work on the same fifteen jurisdictions after statehood is progressing. The encyclopedia on legal executions in the seven northwestern states - North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon - will be released in November of this year and is comprehensive through 2010. The manuscript on executions in the five southwestern states – Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and Nevada - through 2010 is completed; the work has already begun on Nebraska and Kansas; and work will begin for "Oklahoma, including the Indian Territory" by November.

Each execution is presented as a separate case history with at least three parts are addressed:
Throughout the process of legal executions there are often excited utterances by any party, detailed confessions, interesting words during the legal proceeding and at sentencing, and those final words by victims or by the condemned can elicit every imaginable emotion.
