Craig Avery: Radio Host & Playwright

CRAIG AVERY

Big Blend Radio interview with Craig Avery, playwright and host of The Craig Avery show on Channel Radio, England.

Broadcaster and playwright, Craig Avery’s story is an interesting one: It veers from the unpredictability of life immediately post-school, aged 15, trying to break into the fringes of the New Wave music scene in the late nineteen seventies, to the predictability of managing, for almost twenty years, various offices for Royal Mail. Being made redundant from Royal Mail provided the opportunity for him to revisit his passion for media and arts. Soon after his departure from Royal Mail, Craig became the sports editor on a local newspaper which, from studio appearances on an affiliated local FM radio station, lead to him having his own show, The Craig Avery Show on channel radio in the England.

Since 2010, The Craig Avery Show has developed and continues to build a wide and loyal listener base from many countries across the globe with particular success coming from the United States. Each week, the Craig Avery Show has an interview with eminent people from the world of sport, media, film, television and radio. Recently, the global audience has been introduced to a varied diet of interesting guests: Stark Sands, the leading man from the multi-Tony award winning show, Kinky Boots. England cricket Captain, James Tredwell and Australian boxer, Wally Carr are just three notable names to have appeared live on the show.

The radio show really provided the outlet for Craig’s creative writing and subsequently, he has written a number of comedy skits and serious, darker, plays for radio. “Tell Me Your Plans”, “Meeting Hannah” and “From The Verge Of Innocence” are adaptations of these radio plays which combined, form an interesting trilogy: Tell Me Your Plans is a gripping tale of a successful woman’s journey through life from early teens until her forties. The story charts her material success whilst at the same time showing the emotional cost. Meeting Hannah is a story that delves into the darker side of rekindling a dormant relationship using social networks. The Verge Of Innocence concludes the trilogy and generates a feel-good factor for the reader.

The common theme flowing through these books relates to the dangers that can be involved when one re-visits old relationships. Sometimes humorous, sometimes painful, these books are always stimulating and Craig has managed to create an emotional roller-coaster of a ride which ultimately turns out to be a wonderful read. Tell Me Your Plans was produced as a radio play by Glen Kelies whose credits include: Dr Who and Shakespeare for the BBC. His dialogs, both gritty and thoughtful have led to him being highly sort-after to sharpen up scripts, it was one of these scripts that won the Audience Best Film at The Thanet Film Festival 2012. Happy Families is essentially a love story portraying a relationship ripped apart by domestic violence and has been produced as a short film with the full version very close to completion.

Craig intends to take this piece to Theatre and couple it with what he feels is his most challenging piece thus far: I’m Damaged Goods. This is the complex, heart-wrenching story of a woman who feels she is beyond love. Craig grew up in a small, coastal town on the south coast of England, New Romney. He has traveled widely and lived for some time in Australia.
