CELEBRATING SELF-RENEWAL DAY: A CALL TO CARE FOR YOURSELF
By Shelley Whizin
Every February 2nd, we pause to observe Self-Renewal Day—a day dedicated to stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing activities that nurture our growth, maturity, and joy. It’s an opportunity to take a deep breath, reflect on our lives, and renew ourselves—mind, body, and spirit.
ON BIG BLEND RADIO: Transformational life coach Shelley Whizin discusses the important of self-renewal and how self-care helps nourish the body, mind, spirit. Watch here in the YouTube player or download the episode on Podbean.
Self-care often carries a misplaced stigma, seen by some as indulgent or selfish. But let me say this: self-care is not selfish; it’s self-preserving. If we don’t take care of ourselves, who will? We have these incredible human bodies—miraculous vessels that carry us through life—and it’s our job to steward them with love, compassion, and care.
Why Self-Care Matters
Throughout history, self-care has been a cornerstone of human existence. Long before modern medicine, people relied on their own practices and their communities to maintain health and well-being. While medical advancements have given us incredible tools to live longer, healthier lives, the responsibility for self-care still rests with each of us.
Think about it: self-care is not just about the big gestures, like a spa day or a week-long retreat (although those are lovely, too). It’s in the small, intentional actions we take each day to replenish our energy and nourish our souls. It could be as simple as enjoying a walk in nature, rekindling an old hobby, or setting aside time to meditate. These moments remind us of who we are and reconnect us with the essence of being alive.
Renewal is Growth
Self-renewal means more than rest—it’s about growth. It’s about stepping out of autopilot and re-engaging with the parts of ourselves we’ve neglected. Maybe there’s a friendship you’ve lost touch with or a dream you’ve set aside because life got too busy. Self-Renewal Day invites us to revisit those areas and invest in what makes us feel strong, refreshed, and authentically ourselves.
The beauty of self-renewal is that it benefits everyone around us. When we care for ourselves, we bring our best selves to our families, friends, and communities. It’s like the oxygen mask metaphor: we have to put on our own masks first before helping others.
A Call to Action
So, this Self-Renewal Day, I challenge you to ask yourself: “What can I do today to nurture my mind, body, and soul?” Maybe it’s carving out 15 minutes to journal or calling an old friend. Perhaps it’s something bigger, like signing up for that class you’ve been thinking about or setting boundaries that prioritize your well-being.
Let this day be a reminder that caring for yourself is an act of love—not just for you, but for everyone whose lives you touch. You deserve to feel strong, happy, and renewed. And when you do, you light up the world around you.
Remember, our human bodies are a gift. Let’s honor them by living intentionally, taking time to renew ourselves, and stepping into each day with purpose and joy.
It’s your life. Enjoy the journey. And remember to bring love into everything you do, and a lot of humor along the way. Happy Self-Renewal Day!
