DEGRAZIA PAINTS THE JUNGLE

Lance Laber, Executive Director of the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun, chats with Big Blend Radio about the new Ted DeGrazia exhibits “DeGrazia Paints the Jungle” and “DeGrazia Downtown.”

Tucson artists Ted DeGrazia and Marion Sheret DeGrazia were married in a jungle wedding chapel in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1947. Ted came prepared to paint on their honeymoon, and was inspired by the lush tropical jungles and primitive native cultures of Southern Mexico, which provided him with exciting new subject matter featured in “DeGrazia Paints the Jungle”. This wildly colorful selection of paintings from the 1940’s and early 50’s features a dozen paintings on display for the first time.

From lively but remote Indian trading posts, to the traffic jams and skyscrapers of New York City, “DeGrazia Downtown” showcases a collection of street scenes dating from 1940 to 1974.

A free opening reception will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, September 6th, 2019. The exhibits will remain on display through January 29th, 2020.

DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun is a 10-acre historic district in the foothills of Tucson, Arizona’s Santa Catalina Mountains. It was designed and built from the ground up by Ted DeGrazia who achieved worldwide acclaim for his colorful paintings of native cultures of the Sonoran desert. Using traditional adobe bricks crafted on-site, DeGrazia built the gallery so his paintings “would feel good inside”. Visit www.DeGrazia.org.
