DIANE DOBRY: FOOD, WINE & TRAVEL WRITER AND AUTHOR

ON BIG BLEND RADIO: Dr. Diane Dobry talks about her writing, travels to Hungary, and much more. Watch here in the YouTube player or download the podcast on Acast.

Dr. Diane Dobry lives to eat, teach, travel, and tell stories. As an accomplished self-taught cook and writer who knows Hungary and Hungarian wines well, she has filled 50 years of diaries, and has extensive teaching and research experience. Currently an online educator and freelance writer, blogger, podcaster, who worked for almost two decades in higher education PR, Diane made the shift to the faculty side of academia after experiencing the European work-life balance while living in Hungary as an English instructor. Her special interest in Hungary developed while doing research on television there in 2004, which, in a roundabout way led her to become an importer of Hungarian wines to the US.

She’s writing a few books: her memoir, “Getting Hungary; Thirsty for Hungary,” a book on Hungarian wine basics; and most recently, family memoirs, including “Aunt Marie’s Diaries,” a book about her great aunt’s life based on diaries written from 1930 to 1941, and her grandmother’s stories called “Out of Ithaca.” Her websites include www.GettingHungary.com, www.DiscoveryDaze.com, and www.HungarianAquarian.com, all connecting to related social media, videos and podcasts.

Diane’s prior freelance writing work includes covering Citrus County Florida (and travel stories) for its newspaper The Citrus Country Chronicle and as primary writer for the 2017 Citrus County Chamber business and community guide.

While pursuing graduate studies at Columbia University she received a Fulbright award to Germany and Belgium. As an administrator and adjunct at an upstate New York SUNY school, she received a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) grant to create an online international wine course; and in 2014, received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Internationalization. Currently a member of the International Food, Wine, and Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA), Diane writes for their online magazine, Food, Wine and Travel (FWT).

Dr. D’s superpowers include being a grammar geek, speaking Hungarian…conversationally, and reading astrology charts for friends. She speaks at conferences on topics related to research, writing, and her dissertation topic: beliefs regarding death and the afterlife. She is looking forward to retiring to a life of freedom and travel throughout Europe and the UK.
