Nestled in the heart of the South Pacific, Fiji isn’t just about its stunning beaches or vibrant coral reefs. It’s a destination where adventure meets serenity, all against a backdrop of rich culture and warm hospitality. With 333 islands to explore, Fiji offers something for every type of traveler, and its deep connection to nature and tradition makes it unforgettable.

Fiji’s story as a nation is as captivating as its breathtaking landscapes. Following its independence from Britain in 1970, Fiji celebrated its rich multicultural heritage while remaining deeply connected to its natural environment. Most of the population resides on the two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, where English is commonly spoken. Yet, the heartfelt greeting of “Bula” embodies the spirit of Fiji—more than just a simple hello, it invites you to immerse yourself in the Fijian way of life. The phrase “Where happiness comes naturally” perfectly captures the essence of this unique culture.

The Journey Begins
Flying from Dallas-Fort Worth on Fiji Airways’ inaugural flight, I was excited. This wasn’t just a journey to paradise but a chance to dive into a new culture. Upon landing in Nadi, we were greeted with traditional song and dance, and the energy was palpable. That “Bula!” was like a warm hug that told me, “Welcome to the heart of Fiji.”

The Heart of Fiji: Its Villages
While the resorts are gorgeous, the villages truly captured my attention. We were honored to be invited to the Nadi Village, which owns the land on which the Nadi International Airport was built. These communities are the foundation of Fijian life, where everything revolves around togetherness and respect for nature. Visiting the village, I saw how Fijians live harmoniously with the land and sea. The country’s unique history means that Fijians retained ownership of their land, unlike many other former British colonies, which adds depth to their cultural connection.

Land in Fiji is communally owned, which fosters unity and a sense of belonging. Each village is a microcosm of Fijian society, focused on farming, fishing, and honoring tradition. This respect for nature and the environment runs deep and is integral to the Fijian identity.

Fijian Cultural Experiences
Fiji’s culture is alive in every dance, dish, and tradition. One of the most memorable moments was watching a Meke, a traditional Fijian dance that tells stories and honors ancestors. It’s not just a performance—it’s a celebration of community and pride.

We also enjoyed a beachside cooking class, where we prepared two traditional Fijian dishes. First, we cooked prawns and vegetables in a bamboo stalk over an open fire. Then, we made kokoda, a fresh ceviche-style dish with raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk. We also learned how to weave baskets from coconut fibers, which the Fijians call the “tree of life” because every part of it is used daily.

Adventures in Paradise
Fiji isn’t just about relaxation—it’s an adventurer’s dream. One day, we rode in a longboat on the Navua River, navigating lush mangroves before being rewarded with a secluded waterfall tucked away in the jungle. Standing beneath the cool spray, I felt like I’d stumbled upon a hidden world.

Another unforgettable experience was a sandbar picnic in the stunning waters surrounding the Mamanuca Islands. As the tide receded, a tiny patch of golden sand appeared, surrounded by crystal-clear waters. It felt like our private slice of paradise, and we spent the afternoon soaking in the beauty of the surroundings.

Visiting the BULA Reef and Underwater Museum was also a highlight. This marine conservation initiative, launched on World Ocean’s Day 2024, features the world’s most prominent underwater word—spelled out with heat-resistant coral. It’s a stunning testament to Fiji’s commitment to sustainability.

A Trio of Island Escapes
Throughout our time in Fiji, we stayed at three incredible resorts, each offering a different slice of island life:

-Lomani Island Resort: Located in the Mamanuca Islands, this adult-only resort lives up to its name, “Lomani,” which means love. It’s a peaceful haven with beachfront villas, sunrise hikes, and coral conservation trips.

-Nanuku Resort: On the main island of Viti Levu, Nanuku offers an immersive Fijian experience. Spread on a 500-acre private estate on the adventure coast, it weaves barefoot luxury with rich Fijian culture.

-Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa: Near Nadi, Sofitel offers a luxurious retreat with a French twist. This resort has something for everyone, from adults-only Waitui Beach Club to family-friendly activities.

Farewell to Paradise
What stood out most about Fiji wasn’t just its beauty—it was the warmth and joy of its people. Every interaction felt genuine, from the heartfelt conversations to the cheerful “Bula” greetings. As we left, the staff at each resort sang a traditional farewell song, and tears welled in my eyes. It was a beautiful reminder of the bonds we’d formed in Fiji. In this place, community and connection run deep.
