Guitarist Buddy Whittington: Texas Scratch

This episode of Big Blend Radio features guitarist Buddy Whittington who discusses TEXAS SCRATCH, the legendary and highly anticipated blues album featuring three iconic, guitar slinging Texans and their friends. Watch here in the YouTube player or download the podcast on Acast.

Texas Scratch consists of renowned Texas guitarists Jim Suhler (George Thorogood and the Destroyers), Buddy Whittington (John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers), Vince Converse (Sunshine Heights) and the driving drum beat of Jeff Simon (George Thorogood and the Destroyers) with the help of their friend and bassist Nathaniel Peterson (Savoy Brown).

The musicians got together 14 years ago (October 2009) in New Jersey to jam and lay down each other’s tracks at the legendary Showplace Studios. There was very little time for rehearsals since each artist had other obligations, so they had to learn each other’s songs in record time. What ended up being recorded is an album full of the kind of guitar-slaying, foot-tapping modern-day blues music that you could never get enough of — until now!

Although known for their long, illustrious careers with bluesmen and bands including George Thorogood and The Destroyers, John Mayall, Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown, these three musicians had rarely played together.

Out now, the new self-titled album has a total of nine songs, seven of which are written by band members. TEXAS SCRATCH is released on Quarto Valley Records and was recorded in just four days by the late Ben Elliott at his Showplace Studios in Dover, NJ.

“We’re thrilled to be the label that finally releases this legendary album,” says Quarto Valley Records President & CEO Bruce Quarto. “Texas plays such an integral role in the history of blues music. So many great blues musicians hail from the Lonestar State  – Freddie King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, T Bone Walker, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons — just to name a few. It’s only fitting that these three stellar blues shredders, Jim, Buddy and Vince, while a part of that history in their own right, join the list as Texas Scratch!”
