LIBERATED: THE NEW SEXUAL REVOLUTION
Listen to the Big Blend Radio interview with Benjamin Nodot, filmmaker and founder of Magic Lantern Pictures, who discusses his documentary “Liberated: The New Sexual Revolution.” Following the journey of college students on Spring Break, the film provides shocking insight into attitudes and behaviors regarding sex, the normalization of sexual violation, and the struggle against conceptions of gender and sexuality shaped by the media.
Liberated: The New Sexual Revolution (currently available on Netflix) gives us a front row seat to the rise of today’s ‘hook-up’ culture, and how young people are navigating this very toxic social+sexual landscape. From the sandy, booze-filled shores of spring break, we hear story after story showcasing a growing belief among young adults that casual, emotion-free sex is now the norm.
However, not all is lost. Liberated: The New Sexual Revolution also offers an antidote to the hyper-sexualization of this culture by humanizing these young men and women, and showing that beneath the party animal exteriors, exist vulnerable kids who don’t necessarily like the spring break ‘rules’, but feel pressure to follow them because to not do so guarantees a fate much worse in their universe – swift social rejection. Liberated also inspires young people to become critical thinkers and to adopt a more positive way of looking at morality and sexuality. An encouraging example that they may be winning the fight is Shay Douglas, one of the main subjects featured in the documentary. After seeing himself in the film, Shay has gained tremendous insight into how his #MeToo worthy behavior during shooting contributed to this disturbing casual sex trend, and he has since made a very reflective and deliberate change in his life to not perpetuate it.
