SETTLING INTO AUSTIN: A SOUTHWEST PERSPECTIVE
On this episode of Big Blend Radio’s WANDER THE WORLD WITH SHARON podcast, travel writer Sharon K. Kurtz talks about moving from Dallas to the southwest side of Austin, Texas. Watch here in the YouTube player or download the episode on Podbean.

After living in Dallas for 34 years, my husband and I moved to Austin about a year and a half ago to be closer to family. Settling on the southwest side of the city, we’ve discovered a whole different side of Austin beyond downtown—where legendary BBQ, scenic wineries, and live music venues create a uniquely Texan experience. From enjoying brisket at Salt Lick, sipping wine at William Chris Vineyard, and discovering Texas Sotol at Desert Door, this area offers a mix of laid-back charm and rich cultural heritage. While traffic can make getting into the city a challenge, Austin’s thriving music scene makes it worth the effort—whether it’s seeing Lyle Lovett at Austin City Live or catching incredible (and free!) performances at the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival.

In our conversation, I share what it’s been like adjusting to life in Austin, from embracing the outdoor lifestyle at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to dancing the night away at Mercer Dance Hall in Driftwood. We talk about the balance of growth and preserving Austin’s character—including the city’s famous motto, Keep Austin Weird, and how it still rings true in local culture, festivals, and offbeat attractions. I also talk about my love of Willie Nelson, the history of Austin City Live, and share the fun of experiencing Bat Fest and watching the world’s largest urban bat colony emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset—one of Austin’s quirkiest and most unforgettable sights. And, of course, no talk about Austin would be complete without mentioning one of the greatest Texas traditions—bluebonnets in the spring. Whether it’s driving through the Hill Country to see fields of them or spotting patches along the highways, the sight of these vibrant wildflowers is pure magic. Whether you’re a longtime Austinite or just curious about what makes this city special, this episode highlights both the well-known attractions and the hidden gems that make Austin such a great place to live.
