I am a newcomer to Tacoma, WA. I am not a newcomer to Washington State. I am a snowbird, so my time in Tacoma is just a few months a year. I am finding Tacoma has much to offer and I thought I’d share my first impressions with you. I’ll come back next year to let you know what some of my best tourist experiences were.
For now, and as always, planning is the key to getting the most out of visiting a destination. Let’s begin with understanding the top six reasons why visiting Tacoma is a worthwhile destination on its own or in addition to visiting nearby Seattle (45 minutes away by car).
- A Rich Cultural Scene: Tacoma boasts a thriving arts and culture scene, with institutions like the Museum of Glass, Tacoma Art Museum, and Washington State History Museum showcasing a diverse range of exhibits and collections. Visitors can explore galleries, studios, theaters, and public art installations that reflect Tacoma’s creative spirit. All these options are quite tantalizing.
- Natural Beauty: Situated between the waters of Puget Sound and the stunning Mount Rainier, Tacoma offers a picturesque backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. Parks like Point Defiance Park, Owen Beach, and Titlow Beach provide opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, and enjoying scenic views of the surrounding landscapes.
- Historic Landmarks: Tacoma is home to several historic landmarks that offer insights into the city’s past, such as the Museum District and the historic neighborhoods of Old Town and Proctor District, where the art of shopping is perfected. Visitors can explore architectural gems, heritage sites, and cultural institutions that preserve Tacoma’s rich history.
- Waterfront Attractions: Tacoma’s waterfront district is a hub of activity, featuring attractions like the Ruston Way waterfront promenade, the Foss Waterway Seaport, and Thea Foss Waterway. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront, dine at waterfront restaurants, or embark on public or private boat tours to experience Tacoma from a different perspective. My own boat is docked at Tyee Marina. Check out my article and interview covering True North Charters LLC.
- Culinary Delights: Tacoma’s culinary scene is diverse and vibrant, with a mix of local eateries, craft breweries, and farmers’ markets showcasing the region’s flavors. From seafood to international cuisine to food trucks, visitors can savor a variety of culinary delights while exploring Tacoma’s dining options.
- Community Events: Tacoma hosts a range of community events throughout the year, including art walks, music festivals, farmers’ markets, and cultural celebrations. These events offer visitors a chance to connect with the local community, experience Tacoma’s dynamic culture, and participate in festive gatherings.
