Sharing one’s stories with the world brings greater value to one’s life and experiences,” were the words spoken by Erin Thormodsgard when talking to author Tom Mattson about his unique travel stories shared within the pages of his new book, “The Other Worlds: Offbeat Adventures of a Curious Traveler” (Dudley Court Press, January 7, 2020). Join Tom as he takes readers along on his journey across the world, through adventures in country after country, including Cuba, London, Guatemala, and Japan.

What gives this book heart is Mattson’s connections to the local people he meets in each new country. Many have signaled to him: “Make my story travel!” His book shares their stories with the world. Mattson has said his favorite part of traveling is “the people [he] meets, the surprises, the unknowns, the challenges.” This passion is on full display as he illustrates how connections are made between people from vastly different backgrounds. His love for these cultures is evident, and his new book allows those stories to be told, interwoven with his own thoughts and feelings about these people and cultures.

Mattson’s enthralling accounts of his days traveling the world allow people to see new cultures, meet new people, and discover that people are, at their core, just like each other. This book will bring back memories for those who have traveled and will invite others to pack a suitcase and head out on their own adventures. Join Mattson on the plane, fly through the pages, and then wait for the travel bug to bite.

TOM MATTSON grew up in Biwabik, Minnesota. After receiving his juris doctor from the University of Minnesota, he spent years — punctuated by sabbaticals for travel — advocating on cases ranging from family law, price fixing, fires and explosions, to the death penalty and nuclear bomb cleanup and compensation. Tom has enjoyed a parallel career — an ad hoc one that has its seeds in the Chevy and Greyhound explorations.  He’s ridden atop railroad box cars in California, took the controls of a Peruvian locomotive, crawled through a Bolivian silver mine, and was hauled off in a Mexican police car for a Saturday night in the infamous Tijuana jail. He now divides his time between his Minnesota abode near Biwabik on a lake named Lost, his tin-roofed shack in the Guatemala mountains of the Maya people, and motorcycling the American and Canadian West — and re-visiting friends in some of the 75 countries he’s experienced.
