THE THROWAWAYS

On Big Blend Radio, author L. S. Hawker talks about “The Throwaways,” her new thriller that diverges from her first three novels in narrative style, yet remains loosely connected to the plot of her USA Today bestselling debut, “The Drowning Game.”

In this new release, Hawker displays her versatility as a writer by narrating from a male perspective for the first time. She will also please her fans by including a familiar character from “The Drowning Game” now written 30 years younger. As Hawker continually writes her characters into fuller existence, fans can revel in unexpected discoveries made, while newcomers can get a glimpse into the vast, thrilling headspace of a true storyteller.

“The Throwaways” takes readers back to 1986 where George Engle goes through the motions of his life, unattached to the things around him and ungrounded in his identity. Without the passion to strive for a stable career or a serious relationship, George knows he is destined for nowhere — until his aimless existence places him at the center of a dangerous plot.

Late one night, George wakes up inside his car in unfamiliar territory, just in time to watch a house explode. On his back seat lies a bloody knife, a gas can, and a bag of cocaine. Unsure of the circumstances that led to this moment, and terrified of what’s to come, George knows he must elude the police and whoever planted the drugs and weapons. After George unites with his three best friends from high school, the group must work to prove George’s innocence before he’s locked up — or killed.

LS Hawker is the author of the thrillers “The Drowning Game,” “Body and Bone,” and “End of the Road,” all published by HarperCollins Witness Impulse. “The Drowning Game” was a USA Today bestseller and a finalist in the ITW Thriller Awards’ “Best First Novel” category. Her books have been translated into eight languages. Hawker grew up in suburban Denver and wrote her first novel at 14. After receiving her B.S. in Journalism from the University of Kansas, she started a radio show called “People Are So Stupid,” edited a trade magazine, and worked as a traveling Kmart portrait photographer, but never lost her passion for fiction writing.
